Pair of entrance lodges with linking forecourt walls, railings and gate piers.
1895,. dated on porch parapet, for the Earl of Lonsdale, as an entrance to the
Emperor's Drive leading to Lowther Castle. Coursed squared sandstone with
ashlar dressings. Graduated greenslate roof. Cast iron railings. 2-storey,
2-bay square lodges with plinth, quoins and battlemented parapet; and off-centre
battlemented square towers projecting to rear. Corniced chimneys at outer tower
corners and at centre front. Stone-mullioned windows, 2-light in outer bays,
and 5-light in full-height canted inner bays, all with original diamond-leaded
glazing. Projecting battlemented porches on inner returns hold doors with
4-centred heads and hoodmoulds. Hoodmoulds also to windows, including the
round-headed windows in tower lower stages. One-storey rear dog-kennel wings.
Chamfered stone square gate piers with coved cornices and baronets' coronet
finials. Coped dwarf walls bear cast iron railings with cusped arcaded panels
and leafy finials. Built for the visit of the German Emperor whose arms and a
commemorative plaque appear on entrance front of East Lodge.
