SK 38/3925 PARISH OF MELBOURNE CHURCH CLOSE 6/59 (East Side) 10.11.67 Hall Cottages and Stables at Melbourne Hall GV II* Two cottages, stables and coach house. C16, early C17 and early C18 with early C19 addition and alterations. Red brick with stone dressings, and deep chamfered stone plinth to west range. Plain tile roofs with large brick ridge stack to west range and octagonal cupola to north range with leaded base, small pane windows to all sides and ogival leaded roof with weathervane to top, plus brick coped gables. North range has a dentilled eaves band and southern bay of west range has an C18 stone cornice. L-plan, two storeys, and four bays to north range, plus five bays to west range. North range is mostly early C19 and has two wide depressed segmental archways to east with double plank doors, a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window to west and beyond to west a line of quoins with a C17 chamfered four- centred arched doorcase plus returned hoodmould beyond again. Above there are four 2-light flush mullion windows with diamond paned metal casements, that over the western arch only painted on and housing a dovecot. Western range has a recessed C18 bay to south with a 3-light casement window in flush C18 surround to ground floor and a 3-light flush mullion window above. To north there are two chamfered four-centred arched doorcases, that to south with studded wooden door and that to north with a 2-light casement window. Beyond to north there is a small glazing bar sash and beyond again there are two larger similar sashes below plain stone lintels flanking a similar four-centred arched doorcase with studded wooden door. Similar door, with divided overlight set in recessed and chamfered surround, and inserted C20 window to far north. Above in the northern corner there is a 2-light small pane casement and to south there are two similar sashes above the ones flanking the doorcase. Beyond again to south there is a 3-light C20 casement window. West elevation of western range has stone to ground floor with stepped buttresses and C18 brickwork above. Western bays of north range have C19 stable fittings.
