BARROW COURT LANE (west side)
Gatepiers, Gates and series of 12 Pillars forming west boundary wall of formal garden at Barrow Court
G.V.
II*
Gatepiers, Gates and 12 Pillars collectively known as the Twelve Months of the
Year. Circa 1890 by F. Inigo Thomas. Rubble to base of curving quadrant walls
which form the semi-circular enclosure, ashlar coping, gatepiers and piers,
ironwork railings. 6 terms, 2 metres high to either side of central Gatepiers.
Each term has a moulded base and develops into the bust of a woman depicting a
month of the year: the month is carved in letters below each bosom which is
decorated with foliage sprays. Tall Gatepiers, 3 metres high with moulded
cornices and elaborate swagged urn finials. Winged lions to railing abutments.
Simple railings between the 12 months, ornate 2-leaf gates with Tijou inspired
wrought iron lyre panels. This grand feature appears to project into the
adjoining civil parish of Flax Bourton. Together with several other architectural
features it comprises a fine formal garden layout designed by Thomas for Henry
Martin Gibbs; it is included in the Historic Gardens Register : Part 1 Avon.
