II

Farmhouse. Circa late C16, possibly with earlier origins. Extended in late C19. Rendered and painted stone rubble and cob and C19 range of local stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends to earlier range and hipped roof with deep eaves to taller later range. Plan: Original house of 3-room and cross or through passage plan; hall heated by lateral stack at front and inner room to right heated by end stack. It is uncertain whether the lower end was heated. There is a thick cross wall between the hall and inner room with a stair projection adjoining the inner room, providing access to the chamber above. The roof structure above the hall is probably of the early C17 although this may be a replacement for there is the possibility with the low height of the house and the thick wall between the hall and inner room, that the hall may originally have been open to the roof. In the left C19 the lower left end was demolished and replaced with an overall 'L' shaped plan range probably comprising 3 principal rooms, the hall of the earlier range became the kitchen and the inner room the dairy. Exterior: 2 storeys. Taller circa late C19 stone rubble range to left has a regular 3-window front with C20 PVC windows in earlier openings. The lower circa late C16 rendered range to the right has a projecting front lateral stack with cloam oven projection and C19 20-pane sash lighting hall. Stair projection to right lit by circa late C19 casement window. Interior: Ceiling beams obscured by later ceilings and hall fireplace partly blocked. Circa C19 timber stair in projection. Roof structre above hall not fully inspected although it appears circa early C17 with dovetail notched and lap-jointed collars.
