SE 7971 NORTON-ON-DERWENT COMMERCIAL STREET (south side) 9/25 No 22 (The Elms)
GV II House. Early C18, probably with earlier origins, and late C19 alteration and extension in 2 stages. Squared sandstone on plinth with red brick extensions in Flemish bond; pantile roof with brick and rendered stacks. Central stair-hall plan with rear extensions added. 2-storey, 3-window front. Central door with C19 bordered coloured glazing beneath porch of entablature on fluted Doric columns. Tripartite sashes to left and right, and single-pane sashes to first floor. Painted wedge lintels and stone sills to all windows. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. Left of centre and end right stacks. Interior: early - mid C18 staircase to centre room with moulded handrail on turned balusters, and shaped cheek-pieces. Segment- arched fireplace to left of same room. Panelled shutters with original fittings to all ground-floor front openings. In the attic, a crossed-apex cruck truss has been reused over the left cross wall; and there is a door with H-L hinges. The house was the Norton manor house until the late C19.
