4/197 South Retaining Walls, Piers and Central Steps to the Rose Garden

G.V. II

Retaining walls and central steps. Probably c.1865 by John Norton. Coursed rubble retaining walls with octagonal piers at intervals; surmounted by a pierced quatrefoil parapet. Central octagonal piers and a flight of 7 steps with side walls which terminate in lions on haunches supporting shields. (Country Life, 17.V.1902).
