Mill with former millhouse adjoining. C17, remodelled in the C18 and again in the
C19. Waterwheel by Harvey of Helston. Painted rubble with dressed granite quoins,
some jambstones and lintels. Steep grouted scantle slate roofs, with gable ends,
left, otherwise hipped.
Plan : L-shaped plan, the earlier range is the long arm of the L and of 2 storeys
including the former miller's house; the right hand part remodelled and heightened to
give taller first floor with working attic above and returned at right angles to the
front right hand side. A large overshot wheel survives beside the right hand wall.
The earliest evidence is a chamfered granite jamb and lintel to a former wide doorway
(now window) at the far right of the main range, together with a through passage
position within the former miller's house indicate its C17 origins. The miller's
house, left, has an unheated room left of the former passage and a larger heated room
right. The L-shaped mill adjoins to the right and is undivided on each floor. Most
of the C19 machinery and fittings survive. On the ground floor is the timber
framework for drive machinery for 2 pairs of millstones (used alternately for
different grades of fineness), these were set into the floor above, also on the first
floor are sack hoisting machinery and hoppers filled from the attic. The roof is
steep, giving working space to the attic, and within the wing at the front is a large
grain hutch set into the attic floor. There is also some later machinery which was
operated by electricity. The floors and roof structure are C19. Still in working
order is the sack hoisting pulleys and belt with hand operated clutch allowing a sack
to be hoisted to the attic through an automatically opening and closing hatch.
2 storeys. 3 window south-east front, the right hand part taller and returned with
hipped end at the front, right. The former miller's house, left, has a doorway left
of middle and a small window at either side. The first floor walling is a C19
rebuild and there is 1 first floor window opening. The mill has a doorway, left, and
a window over. Just to the right of this the wall is taller and returning left a
weather boarded gable end rises above the house roof (in the gable of this is a 2-
light casement to light the attic); a former doorway, right, near the angle with the
wing and another window over and the wing, far right, has a window opening to each
floor at the front.
The right hand side wall is blind and only pierced for the waterwheel drive shaft.
The overshot waterwheel is about 20 feet in diameter and hasoak spokes, wooden
buckets and cast-iron wheel segments bolted together.
Interior : largely intact since the C19 (see plan).
Lowertown Mill or Tregonnack Mill is a particularly complete and unaltered example of
a mill with adjoining miller's house. Across the road is Anvower Mill qv.
