Details
HENDERSKELFE BROAD WALK SE 7169 (west end) Castle Howard 12/38 Victoria gate and railings and pier to north GV I Gates and railings and pier to north. Early C18. For Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Wrought iron and sandstone ashlar. Rusticated pier, cruciform on plan, approximately 5 metres in height with moulded cornice, pyramidal cap and pineapple finial, matched by a similar pier to south, listed as angle pier of walls to walled garden (qv). Gates and railings approximately 4 metres in height. Railings: spearhead bars with dog bars and scrolled standards surmounted by finials. Gates: dog bars and scrollwork flanked by fretted standards surmounted by openwork urns. Elaborately scrolled overthrow with cipher of Charles Howard surmounted by crown. Re-sited at extension of walls to walled garden (qv) to west. Hussey C, English Gardens and Landscapes 1700-1750, 1967.
