refenestration and minor addition. Timber-framed, plastered
and brick, peg-tiled roofs red brick stacks. Plan irregular
rectangle of 2 early units at right angles with 2 deep
lean-tos filling internal angle, also minor outer lean-to on W
side. 2 storeys, attic and cellar.
Front, N elevation: red brick, some burnt headers, dentilled
eaves, gambrel roof, half hipped at W end, external stack seen
at E end gable. 4 bays, doorway has moulded frame, simple
cornice hood, C20 6-panel door upper glazing. All windows
early C20 casements with metal frames. W of door, one 3-light,
one 2-light, to E, one of 2 lights. First floor, three 2-light
windows over those below, blocked window aperture over door. W
end elevation: street range with butted rear wing to S. Large
stack between with minor roof link, shallow 2-storey lean-to
on front from street range, second stack central to wing. Wing
has half length slated lean-to continued to full length as C20
conservatory with door. Ground floor, C20 3-light casement
window 6x3 panes. First floor two 3x4 paned C20 sash windows
with horns, also 2x3 paned casement window. Street range end
wall, first floor, 2-light casement window and single-light
casement in minor lean-to. E end elevation: street range and
wing clear, cellar trap adjacent to external stack on blank
end wall of street range. 2 deep lean-tos, to N, single storey
with compositiion tiles, two 3-light metal casement windows
and single-light casement. Minor lean-to roof over from street
range has small 3-light casement window. S lean-to C19, 2
storeys, brick, corrugated asbestos roof, ground floor
segment-headed window now with C20 2-light casement, simple
boarded door, first floor, two 3-light casement windows. Roof
of block continues to S as part of large garage complex.
INTERIOR: No.54. Chamfered central axial joists show C17 3
celled division of house. Rear block also of timber framing.
The close conjunction of the 2 houses, now linked, may
represent C17 `unit system' of building, 2 closely associated
complete houses each having closely related families. The
building was once the Red Lion Inn.
