Details
TG 2308 NW BANK PLAIN 16/24 (south-west side) 8.4.81. Barclays Bank and attached area railings. - II Bank. 1929-31 by E. Boardman & Son and Brierley & Rutherford of York. Rusticated Portland stone on ground floor, red brick above; hipped slate roof; 4 red brick chimneys to south facade. Classical style in the Palladian manner. V-shaped plan with the main block comprising the banking hall fronting Bank Plain and the administrative offices facing south onto Castle Meadow. Main north-east front: 2 storeys and attic; 11 bays symmetrical, with slightly projecting entrance bays at ends and alternate projecting window bays. Rusticated quoins. Double-leaf doors are flanked by Doric columns and pilasters under a triglyph frieze and pediment. 2-light ground-floor windows; first floor windows have sashes with glazing bars in shouldered architraves, alternately with pediments on consoles. Segmental headed attic dormers. South-east return: fenestration 1:1:3:1:1. Wrought iron area railings. South facade: 3 storeys and attic; fenestration 1:6:1:6:1. Pedimented central doorway; shouldered architraves to enriched first-floor windows only, dormers. Interior: Monumental banking hall of basilican form with aisles and apsed ends. 7 bays with square Corinthian columns; tunnel vault with coffered ceiling; clerestory of Diocletian windows. 3-bay apses have arched recesses and central windows with pediments.
