II

Cemetery lodge and gates. 1856. By Thomas Oliver. Lodge and gateway rock faced stone, possibly magnesian limestone from Marsden quarry (cf. Church of St Andrew, Park Avenue (qv)) with ashlar dressings; roof Lakeland slates with cast-iron cresting; gates wrought-iron. Gothic style. 2-storey, one-window lodge with one-storey, one-window wing set back at left, continuous with high vehicle entrance arch flanked by pedestrian arches. Lodge at left has front gable with chamfered surrounds and mullions to canted ground-floor bay window and paired first-floor lights, the latter under pointed relieving arch. Gable rests on roll-moulded kneelers. Pointed arch to window in set-back left bay. Steeply pitched roof with fleur-de-lys cast-iron cresting. Triple gateway has flattened pointed pedestrian and vehicle arches with relieving arches over wide-chamfered reveals and over pierced trefoils. Clasping buttress at right has long sloped coping. 3 gables above arches, the central higher and containing corbelled bracket to low-relief cross under relieving arch. Ball-flower stops on gable coping. Outer gables have triple-moulded ridge finial, the central a cross-gable peak with cusped blind tracery and stone cross finial. Gates have round panels at dog-bar level with wrought palmette quatrefoil patterns, high tendril finials to hinged uprights which carry scrolled bracing to top rail; intermediate rails have trefoil-headed panels and spike finials above central rail. A fine example of local stone and local iron-forging skills. Lodge empty at time of survey and all doors and windows blocked. (Corfe T: The Buildings of Sunderland 1814-1914: Newcastle: 1983-: 15).
