SW6427 CHURCH STREET 631-1/4/48 (West side) 22/05/72 Steps, railings, gate piers and cross to south-east of Church of St Michael (Formerly Listed as: Steps and gate piers at Church of St Michael)

Steps and gate piers and cross. Medieval cross, otherwise C18, possibly contemporary with 1763 church by Thomas Edwards. Granite ashlar piers; dressed granite steps, otherwise granite rubble with granite dressings. Wide entrance approached by wide flight of 6 steps; square-on-plan gate piers; deep landing with blocked cattle grid and further flight of 10 steps up and curving towards left and right to churchyard level and with wall on their left. Gate piers have chamfered plinths and moulded cornices; old, possibly original wrought-iron balustrade with scrolled handrail, on right of steps; early C19 railings surmounting wall inside left of entrance. Bench on either side of cattle grid, the one on the left with medieval cross set into panel at back. Path at top of steps is of dressed granite flagstones and leads to church porch.
