GV II

Cotton mill, now clothing factory. Probably mid C19, in 2 builds; altered. Red brick with sandstone dressings, (roof not visible). Long narrow rectangular plan on north bank of Ashton Canal. Eight-storey 20-window stepped north facade (grouped 4:4:4:8, the first and third groups slightly set back) plus a 1-bay sprinkler tower at the north-east corner; ground floor concealed by added single-storey shed under 2-span roof; otherwise, all windows have raised sills and wedge lintels. Right-hand (west) return wall, 5 windows (the outer windows all blind). Rear (overlooking canal), 8 storeys including basement, 21 windows, stepped back between the 8th and 9th. Interior: fireproof construction with cast-iron columns and lateral segmental vaults. Forms part of impressive and evocative group of mills lining Ashton Canal in this locality.
