Gazebo. Late C15. Carries arms of John Russell, Bishop of Lincoln 1480-1494.
Coursed ironstone rubble with pale limestone quoins and dressings. Collyweston
slate roof. Small octagonal tower of 2 storeys. Lower storey has through
passageway with chamfered 4-centred arches. Passageway turns corner between Main
Street and Church Lane. Blocked round window in limestone surround with pointed
head. Upper storey has blocked windows on alternate sides of tower with
chamfered 4-centred arches and cut spandrels. Square panel above W window has
blind tracery and heraldic shield. Entrance, via raised walkway along adjacent
wall, has chamfered 4-centred arch. Interior: small upper chamber has cupboard
recesses between windows. Scheduled Ancient Monument No 180. Under guardianship
of English Heritage.
