CARTMEL FELL WINSTER SD 49 SW 4/19 Birket Houses 12.12.84 G.V. II

House, now hotel. 1909. By Dan Gibson. Roughcast stone with stone dressings and slate roofs. L-plan with gabled cross wings to ends and single storey ranges round kitchen court to east. South facade of 2 storeys with attic, 5 bays; the 1st bay projects under gable with recessed loggia, the 2nd bay forms gabled re-entrant bay window, 4th bay projects as gabled 2-storey porch. Ovolo-mullioned windows have label moulds, most with king mullions and transoms, and leaded glazing with rectangular quarries. Verandah has dripcourse to 3 sides and 4 round piers, 2-light windows flank entrance with architrave, key and half-glazed door; windows have decorative grilles in some panes. 2nd bay of ground floor has 2+1+2-light window with 3 lights to return; 3rd bay has 2+2-light window as has 5th bay. 1st floor has 2+2-light window; 2nd bay has 2+1+2-light window with 3 lights to return; 3rd bay has 3+3-light window; 4th bay has 2+1+2-light window with 2-light returns, 3-light attic window above has label mould raised over armorial bearing (Birket); 5th bay has 2+2-light window; only window to 1st bay has transom. Porch has false 4-centred arch and label mould with stops inscribed: "MBH" and "1908". Inner 9-panel door with ornate handle. Extruded stack with setoffs and rounded shafts in angle to left of porch. Dated lead rainwater heads and downpipes, and wall gutter with cresting. Small cross-axial stack. Left return of 4 bays; 2nd bay projects under gable, 3rd bay breaks forward with lateral stack, setoffs and rounded shaft to left. Windows as above; 2+2-light windows to 1st and 2nd bays, 2+1+2-light windows with 2-light returns to 2nd bay; 3-light window to 1st floor of 4th bay; ground floor windows have transoms. North facade of 4 bays with 2-bay return to left. 1st, 2nd and 4th bays gabled, 1st, 3rd and 4th bays project to differing degrees. Windows as above; ground-floor has 3:2+2:2 (2 transoms): 2+2-light windows; 1st floor has 2+3+2-light and 2+2-light windows; 2- and 3-light windows to gables of 1st and 2nd bays and concealed gable to right of 3rd bay. Re-entrant lean-to porch with stack above, rounded shaft; large stack to valley between 3rd and 4th bays. Return has projecting gabled 1st bay, swept down to right. Windows have dripstones and timber mullioned and transomed windows; cross-axial stack with round shafts. East facade of 4 gabled bays; 1st bay has 2+2-light stone mullioned windows, other windows wood mullioned; re-entrant lean-to porch and low service ranges, wood mullioned windows, one to end of north range has dated grille in one pane. South range has wrestler slates, lean-to projection with garden seat and flanking niches to south. Interior not inspected but said to have original fittings eg. plasterwork, doors, light fittings, built-in furniture and integral heating system; some panelling believed to be C16 from former house on site.
