REGENT AVENUE, (North side)

(Formerly listed as Nos.1 AND 2)

GV
II

Formerly two cottages, now a single dwelling. Later C18 (said to be dated 1767 in interior); altered and extended in C19. Mostly hand-made brick, raised by six courses of common brick, with roof mostly of corrugated asbestos sheet (replacing thatch), and some slate over addition at west end.

Linear single-depth four-bay plan, plus added bay at west end and two added lean-to extensions to rear. One-and-a-half storeys raised to two low storeys, with four windows irregularly spaced at first floor.

The former eaves line is marked by a saw-tooth brick band with a coping of stone slate which steps slightly over the upper windows; the openings are irregularly disposed, being offset towards the left, with a doorway at the left-hand end, two two-light windows at ground floor and two smaller ones above these, then a blocked doorway, another doorway, a larger two-light window to the right of this and a small one above and between them; further to the right a very small square window at mid-level (probably for staircase) and at the right-hand end an altered window at ground floor and a two-light window directly above. Most of these windows appear to be sliding sashes: at ground
floor, 6+6, 12+12 and 12+12 panes; and at 1st floor, 2+2, altered, 6+6 and 4+4 panes.

The addition at the left end (probably a dairy or similar service room) has a gable wall partly built of cobblestones. Double chimney stack on centre of ridge, and single chimneys at both (original) gables.

Rare survival of pre-industrial domestic building.
