Details

TQ 2781 NE and SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER GLOUCESTER PLACE, W1 43/113 ;54/4 (West side) Nos. 21 to 75 (odd). 14.1.70 G.V. II Long terrace of town houses. c.1790-1800 Portman Estate development. Stock brick with stucco, channelled or block rusticated ground floors; mostly concealed slate roofs. 4 storeys and basements, with some added dormered mansards and some with full 4th floors. 3-window wide fronts. Semicircular arched doorways to left with panelled doors and pilastered or Greek Doric columned side lights, Coade imposts and delicately patterned fanlights with lead ornament. Recessed sashes, some with glazing bars, under flat gauged arches to upper floors; No. 69 to 73(odd) with stucco architraves, those on 1st floor with cornices on consoles. Plat band over ground floor stucco-work; crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses. Original, cast iron, geometric and anthemion patterned, 1st floor balconies. Cast iron area railings with urn finials, those of Nos. 23, 31, 35, 39 and 73 with elegant iron lampstandards incorporated. No. 73 has been partially rebuilt in facsimile. No. 65 was the home of William Wilkie Collins (G.L.C. plaque). Part of one of the most extensive and intact sequences of Georgian terraced houses in London.
