SE23NW POLLARD LANE, Newlay 714-1/5/1014 (East side (off)) Weir and retaining walls on River Aire
GV II
Weir and retaining walls. 1690 and late C19. Gritstone. The weir is approx 50m long and is situated approx 60m downstream of Newlay Bridge. The walling is on the N bank of the river, at the point where the Kirkstall Forge goit began. Records of Kirkstall Forge show that by 1690 the lease from Lord Savile had passed through several hands to the Spencer group of ironworks; the rent was increased in 1690 when a new lease was negotiated following the construction of a new weir at Newlay to power the slitting and rolling mill.
