SS5533SE DIAMOND STREET 684-1/7/111 (East side) 31/12/73 No.1 Tavern in the Town Public House (Formerly Listed as: DIAMOND STREET No.1 Albert Inn)

II

Public house. Probably mid or late C17, with superficial remodelling and addition of left rear wing in mid C19; adjoining this wing on the Silver Street frontage, an addition of similar C19 date, probably a separate house originally. Rendered red brick, the earliest parts in English bond (brick dimensions 8.5-9 x 2-2.5 inches); right-hand side wall is at least partly of timber-bonded C19 brick. Tarred slated roof with areas of pantile at the rear; decorated barge-boards on left gable of main range to Diamond Street. Latter has original red brick chimney with rebuilt top on right gable; late C19 cream brick chimney on left gable. House incorporated on Silver Street frontage has rendered chimney on right gable. Diamond Street range has 2-room plan with gable fireplaces and central through-passage; partition between left-hand room and passage now removed. Staircase (straight flight) adjoining passage on right probably occupies original stair position. Original rear wing on right, apparently never heated. 2 storeys. 3-window range to Diamond Street. Upper-storey and right-hand ground-storey windows are long and low, probably occupying the space of former C17 mullioned windows; now replaced by 3-part C19 windows with 2-pane sashes in centre and 4-pane casements at either side. Left-hand ground-storey window has late C19 sashes of 8 panes. Centre door mid C19 with 6 flush panels. Front to Silver Street has windowless gable to main range. Wing to left has 1 window in each storey. Incorporated house to left again is 2-window range. Inserted garage recessed glazed doors to left. Casement window of 3 lights to right with 2-pane transom lights. Upper storey has 8-pane casement windows of C19 containing old glass; 2 lights to left, 3 to right. INTERIOR: inspected while ground storey was stripped out in 1986. Walls of main range mostly of original brick apart from some alterations in rear wall and left-hand (N) end of front wall, which has been wholly rebuilt in C19. A notable example of C17 brickwork in Devon.
