Research Principles

Here we set out the principles that underpin the research that we carry out at Historic England.

  • We carry out and fund innovative research to foster understanding and enjoyment of the historic environment and to support its protection and management.
  • We aspire to be a leader in this field and our research is both practical and multidisciplinary in nature.
  • We work in partnership with a wide range of individuals and organisations in the heritage sector and with other research organisations such as the Research Councils and universities to ensure our research has maximum impact.
  • Our research is guided by a number of internal thematic research strategies. These were produced in consultation with external experts and provide a context for applied research in key areas, such as heritage science, Prehistory and industrial archaeology. We also fund the creation of regional research frameworks that guide heritage-related research at a more local level.
