PLANT REMAINS FROM AN 11TH CENTURY CESSPIT AT LINCOLN, DANES TERRACE (DT 1 74)

Author(s): L C Moffett

Only one feature from the small number of features sampled on this site produced sufficient material to be worth further analysis. This was a mid-late 11th century cesspit. The majority of seeds were fig seeds (Ficus carica), but there were some other fruit remains including strawberry (Fragaria vesca), raspberry (Rubus cf. idaeus), grape (Vitis vinifera), apple (Malus sylvestris/domestica) and a possible bullace (Prunus domestica ssp. insititia). A few plants of disturbed and wet ground were present, and a single seed of a garden ornamental, columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris).
