TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM ST MARGARET'S HOSPITAL, HAMILTON ROAD, TAUNTON, SOMERSET

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge

The present building on this site is thought to date from the early-sixteenth century, both on stylistic grounds and from documentary evidence. A gallery, constructed in the twentieth century, is thought to have utilised wood of possible seventeenth century origin. An assessment was made of the timbers of the roof and gallery for their potential for dendrochronological analysis. Most timbers were judged to be unsuitable because they did not contain sufficiently long ring series. Four timbers were sampled, and two series crossmatched with each other, but none of the series dated.
