School Buildings: the state of knowledge

Author(s): Joanna Smith

The report is an overview of what is known about school buildings and identifies the gaps in knowledge, the purpose being to inform future research into the building type. The remit of the overview was all purpose-built structures for educational use through England (excluding tertiary education). It was undertaken at the request of John Cattell, Chief Buildings Historian, and was prompted by current government programmes that will result in the rebuilding of around 50% of all schools within the state sector. The report encompasses an overview, bibliography and four appendices, which cover external and internal sources of information, current or recent research and the list of educational authorities participating in the government initiatives.
