Church of St John the Baptist, Whitbourne, Herefordshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers of the Belfry Floor

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on timbers of the belfry floor at this church. Four samples, taken from three foundation beams and a timber in the north wall, have been successfully dated to potentially four separate fellings. These beams are now known to have felling dates of after AD 1414, AD 1471–96, AD 1695–1714, and spring AD 1717. A site sequence containing the other five samples is undated, probably due to the erratic nature of growth.
