Final Report for the Review of National Mapping Programme for London and Survey of an Area within Bromley and Croydon

Author(s): Helen Saunders, Maria Medlycott

It has long been recognised that aerial photographs are a primary source for archaeological data. While large areas of England have had the available aerial photographs reviewed and archaeological assets mapped, the area within Greater London has not been covered, except around the periphery where projects in surrounding counties have, in places, crossed the Greater London border. As development pressure grows within London it has become essential to assess the potential of the extensive aerial photographic archive to enable better strategic planning and development management. The National Mapping Strategy (English Heritage 2009) highlights that the NMP is a key HE programme, delivering high quality information to HERs to be used for managing the historic environment through planning and other statutory systems, but it also provides the community with a unique perspective on their environment. This comprehensive synthesis of the archaeological information available on aerial photographs is intended to assist research, planning, and protection of the historic environment; three key things that this project has addressed.
