PLANT REMAINS FROM ANNETWELL STREET, CARLISLE: A SYNTHESIS.

Author(s): J P Huntley

The 205 samples analysed for their plant remains from this Roman fort have been integrated within the broad archaeological context. They demonstrate differences between the two major Roman periods of occupation which does not appear to be related to just context type. Analysis of the ecological groups present indicate the widespread dispersal of plant material over the whole site with only a few areas for specific disposal/usage. This reinforces the recommendation that, for other Carlisle excavations, many samples should be scanned with a much smaller number analysed in detail with specific questions in mind.
