TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF NATIVE AND BALTIC TIMBERS FROM BLAYDES STAITHE HULL, HUMBERSIDE

Author(s): J Hillam

The analysis of timbers from the medieval waterfront along the original course of the River Hull is described. The waterfront timbers generally had relatively few rings and no dating was achieved. The base planks from a wooden vat which may have been used in the fish salting industry were also examined. They produced a 317-year tree-ring sequence which crossmatched chronologies from the Baltic region over the period AD1148-1464. It is suggested that the vat was built from imported timbers in circa 1490.
