The Tree-Ring Dating of Milley’s Hospital, Lichfield, Staffordshire

Author(s): Daniel Miles, Michael Worthington

Nine timbers were sampled from the truncated rear wing at Milley’s Hospital, Lichfield, Staffordshire. Five timbers dated and were combined to form the 88-ring site master MILLEYS1, spanning the years AD 1564 - 1651. Felling date ranges from summer AD 1651 to spring AD 1652 were identified. The dendrochronological evidence is not consistent with the presumed construction date of circa AD 1504, which was when the hospital was re-endowed by Thomas Milley, a canon residentiary of the Cathedral of Lichfield.
