Sutton Town Centre Historic Area Assessment

Author(s): Jack Hanson, Adam Partington, Olivia Morrill, Thomas Linington

This report details the findings of a Level 3 Historic Area Assessment undertaken as part of the Sutton Town Centre Heritage Action Zone initiative. Sutton Town Centre is located within the London Borough of Sutton in south-west Greater London. Originating as a highway-settlement at a major crossroads and turnpike, Sutton expanded dramatically following the arrival of the railways in the mid-19th century. Sustained growth over the following century saw major commercial, residential, civic and infrastructure development transform the town centre. Today’s townscape draws its heritage significance from these phases of the settlement’s past, illustrated by a rich assemblage of buildings and areas of architectural and historical interest.
