Waterlogged Insect Remains from Southampton
Author(s): E P Allison, H Kenward
Insect remains collected using non-standard techniques from 'waterlogged' Saxon and medieval contexts at two sites in Southampton were examined. The data obtained has been added to that from previous work on insect material from the same features. Limited ecological information was obtained, but the number of samples was small and the abundance of insects recovered rather low, for much interpretation. The potential for exploiting 'waterlogged' material at Southampton was clearly shown, however. A single sample from a medieval context on site 124 was also examined. In this case, preservation had been by 'mineralisation' and the insect remains consisted entirely of several thousand Dipteran puparia.
