Soho Foundry was built in c.1795-7 as an innovative integrated engineering factory designed for the efficient production of steam engines. It comprised the foundry with attached furnaces, the steam-powered Boring Mill for the machining of engine cylinders and a variety of other buildings including engineering shops, warehousing, offices and worker's housing. The site remained in use as a foundry and engineering works until the mid 20th century.
