THE STUMBLE, ESSEX (BLACKWATER SITE 28): CARBONISED NEOLITHIC PLANT REMAINS

Author(s): P Murphy

This report on 352 samples from neolithic contents supercedes while incorporating some data from AM Lab Report 157/88. Crops represented, in order of abundance, are Triticum dicoccum, Hordeum sp var nudum, Triticum aestivum s.l., Linum sp. and Triticum monococcum. There is a restricted weed flora dominated by large-seeded taxa. Corylus nutshells are almost as frequent as cereal remains and rosaceous fruits (mainly P. spinosa) are also common. Other woodland taxa include Stellaria graminea, Moehringia trinervia, Tilia sp, Quercus sp and Solanum dulcamara. Unidentified rhizome and root fragments are common. Results from this, at present the most extensively sampled English neolithic site, indicate an economy based partly on agriculture, partly on foraging. The spatial distribution of macrofossils is examined and some activity areas distinguished.
