Three sherds of Saxon pottery were thin sectioned and found to contain inclusions of crushed black flint. Winchester lies on the Chalk so a local origin is likelyAt nearby Hamwih flint-tempered pottery becomes dominantin the assemblage in the later eight ninth-century A.D. and is common over much of South-East England.
