SOIL MATERIALS FROM THE RAMPART AT WATERTOWER STREET, CHESTER

Author(s): Matt Canti

Soils used for the construction of the rampart at Watertower Street, Chester, were examined in conjunction with comparative local samples. Through particle-size analysis and mineralogy, they were shown to have been dug from a boulder-clay, probably having a dark, well-developed topsoil. Lines of humic material between the blocks were found to be of two types, either topsoil or plant material. The former may have been laid to facilitate traffic or tamping of the surface; the latter could be part of a strapping system, but its occurrence was too sparse to rule out a chance inclusion.
