Bullock's Haste Common, Cottenham, Cambridgeshire: Request Survey

Author(s): RCHME

In February 1996 the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England undertook an archaeological survey of the well-preserved earthwork remains at Bullock's Haste Common (henceforth referred to as Bullock's Haste), in Cottenham parish, South Cambridgeshire. This work was undertaken following a request from English Heritage, arising out of scheduling casework, and will contribute towards a deeper understanding of the site. The project was the responsibility of staff from the Archaeological Field Office in Cambridge. The site at Bullock's Haste lies on the very low lying ground of Smithy and Setchel Fens, at a maximum of 3m above O.D., at National Grid Reference TL 465 701, 1.5km north-east of Cottenham village. The majority of the earthworks occur in two adjacent pasture fields, covering an area of 7.38 ha (13.44 acres) contained between Setchel Drove and Cottenham Lode, and form a small surviving element of an extensive ploughed-out Romano-British and earlier landscape, most of which is now only visible from the air.
