South Hampshire Lowlands, South East Mixed (Wooded)

The South Hampshire Lowlands are sandwiched between the chalk downs to the north (Hampshire Downs and South Downs) and the South Coast Plain to the south. This strip of gently undulating lowland runs from the Test Valley in the west to Havant in the east. It is a landscape of mixed farmland and woodland crossed by the wide, lush river valleys of the Test, Itchen and Meon. Of the Character Area, 41% is in agricultural use, 16% is woodland (of which over half is ancient woodland), 31% is urban and the remainder is classified as semi-natural. Of the Character Area, 4.5% falls within the New Forest National Park.
