ANALYSIS OF MEDIEVAL & POST MEDIEVAL GLASS FROM THE CITY OF LONDON

Author(s): C Mortimer

Quantitative analysis of 90 glass vessel fragments, excavated from 15 sites from the City of London dating from the twelfth to the seventeenth century AD showed a wide range of glass types. Both soda and potash were used as alkalis amongst the lighty-tinted glasses. Twelve high-lime green-tinted glasses were investigated. Glass with high lead content was mostly observed amongst pieces which were coloured or opaque. Several different types of opaque white glass were discovered. Two high-lead transparent yellow pieces were examined. Qualitative analysis showed that cobalt-blue enamel and gold were used on fragments of decorated Islamic glass. Comparable material from other sites and the evidence for changes over time are discussed.
