THE MOLLUSCAN REMAINS FROM A BRONZE AGE CAIRN AT HARDENDALE NAB, SHAP, CUMBRIA.

Author(s): N Thew

Molluscs analysed from a funerary cairn at Hardendale Nab, Cumbria have yielded information on the construction and use of the cairn, the local environment before, during and after the building of the cairn, and the environment around and further away from the cairn. The first three phases of the cairn date from the Bronze Age while the final phase is of a Roman or Anglo-Saxon origin. Two rare snail species were found during this study: Vitrea subrimata, which has only once been found as a Flandrian fossil, and Clausilia dubia, which has NEVER been found in its fossil state.
