TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH, LOWER SAPEY, HEREFORD & WORCESTER

Author(s): Ian Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis of samples from rafters in the nave and chancel roofs, the nave tie-beams, the repaired chancel arch tie-beam, and the bellframe has revealed that the bulk of the surviving timber structure in Lower Sapey Church dates from the later fifteenth century. The exception is the tie-beam inserted into the chancel arch following its replacement. Since this timber is clearly a re-used element the early sixteenth-century date obtained from it does not provide a reliable guide to this phase of the building history.
