Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Chiddingly Place, Chiddingly, East Sussex

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Cliff Litton

Analysis undertaken on thirty-seven samples from timbers of the main building, the south-east range, and the parlour roof at Chiddingly Place produced three site sequences. Site sequence CHDESQ01, of 253 rings, contains twenty-four samples, with samples being from the main building, the south-east range, and the parlour, and spans the period AD 1324-1576. Site sequence CHDESQ02, of 208 rings, spans the period AD 1324-1531 and contains two samples from the main building and one from the south-east range. Site sequence CHDESQ03, of 103 rings, contains three samples, all from the south-east range, and spans the period AD 1474-1576. Additionally, sample CHD-E03, from the parlour, was dated to AD 1488-1547, and samples CHD-G03 and CHD-G07, both from the main range, were dated to AD 1457-1519 and AD 1527-73, respectively. Timbers with complete sapwood were dated in the main building, to an AD 1573 felling, and in the south-east range, to an AD 1575/6 felling. The felling date range calculated for timbers of the parlour is AD 1565-85. The dendrochronological evidence suggests a major campaign of construction in the AD 1570s, with the main range possibly predating both the parlour and the south-east range.
