POLLEN ANALYSIS OF BAWSEY BRONZE AGE RING DITCH, NORFOLK.

Author(s): R G Scaife

Pollen analysis has been carried out on the buried land surface underlying a Bronze Age burial mound at Bawsey, Norfolk. The soils underlying the structure areof an acidic nature (podzolic) and therefore there was fine pollen preservation. This analysis has shown that the vegetation prior to the construction of the mound comprised dominantly lime woodland with hazel. There isalso evidence of heathland in the pollen record. This may have formed either as ground flora to open woodland or areas of open heathland producing a heathland/ woodland mosaic. It is clear from the post barrow soil formation that this heathland became dominant.
