Dartmoor, Upland and Upland Fringe

Author(s): Jeremy Lake

Dartmoor is a high, open-moorland landscape set in an enclosed, pastoral and woodland fringe, crossed in all directions by fast flowing rivers, underlain by a large granite batholith exposed on many hills as rocky tors. The high moor overlooks the Culm to the north, the Tamar valley to the west, and the rolling hills of South Hams and Torbay to the south-east. Almost all the Character Area is National Park (97%) and 11% is woodland, whilst a large proportion of the area (39%) is common land.
