Whitefriars, a Carmelite friary, was founded in 1342 on a 10-acre site on the south-eastern outskirts of Coventry. The Carmelites, or White Friars, were a mendicant order originating in Palestine in the 12th century. The first Carmelite hermitage in England was established at Hulne near Alnwick, Northumberland, c.1240.
