TREE-RING DATING OF OAK SAMPLES FROM THE GREAT HALL, SOLAR AND EAST WING OF GAINSBOROUGH OLD HALL.
Author(s): Robert Howard
A total of thirteen samples were obtained from the Great Hall, the Solar and the East Wing of Gainsborough Old Hall in January 1987. Of the nine taken from the Great Hall itself, eight matched to produce a sequence giving an estimated felling date range of 1453 to 1485. Since these eight samples were taken from a wide range of locations this must represent a range of building date(s) for the Great Hall as a whole. A single sample was obtained from the Solar. This produced an estimated felling date range of 1451 to 1482.With only one sample available from the Solar it is somewhat difficult to conclude with absolute confidence that this represents a building date for this portion of the building. Three samples were obtained from two timbers in the East Wing. Two of these samples, both from the same timber gave an estimated felling date range of 1462 to 1484.It should be stressed that the very small number of timbers sampled in the East Wing, in relation to the size of this portion of the building, makes it impossib-le to conclude that this represents the building date for the East Wing as a whole.
