TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF OAK TIMBERS FROM CASTLE STREET, CARLISLE, 1981-82.

Author(s): C Groves

Dendrochronological analysis of 117 oak samples from Castle Street, Carlisle, produced two absolutely dated reference chronologies covering 349BC-AD103 and AD467- 770. The former is the first English chronology to span the period 322-257BC, thus linking existing Iron Age and Roman chronologies. Tree-ring dates were obtained for several late first and second century structures and also a Saxon timber-lined pit.
