BAGOT'S PARK, ABBOTS BROMLEY, STAFFORDSHIRE, ARCHAEOMAGNETIC DATING REPORT, 2001

Author(s): Paul Linford

A recent study of Bagot's Park near Abbots Bromley by the Staffordshire county archaeologist has revealed the remains of eighteen medieval and post-medieval glassmaking furnace sites. As part of an ongoing project to investigate the evolution of glassmaking in the Park, the CfA was asked to provide archaeomagenetic dates for the last use of each furnace. Six of the furnaces were available for excavation in 2000 and these were sampled for archaeomagnetic analysis. Despite most of the structure of the furnaces having been destroyed in the 1960's, it was possible to produce dates of good precision for four of the furnaces. It was only possible to infer broad indications of the time of last firing for the other two features, owing to the paucity of suitable fired material that survived at these sites.
