Silbury Hill, Wiltshire: The Antler Assemblage Excavated from Silbury Hill in 2007-8

Author(s): Fay Worley

This report presents an analysis of the relatively small and highly fragmented antler assemblage and a chalk block bearing antler strike marks recovered from Silbury Hill in 2007-8. It also summarises antler assemblages recovered during previous investigations. The report concludes that the antler assemblage probably derives from tools used in the construction of the mound, although this can only be confirmed in a few cases. The construction of the mound required a considerable number of antler picks, a resource available only seasonally. The acquisition of antlers would have exerted demand on the late Neolithic economy.
