FROM LIME FOREST TO HEATHLAND - 5000 YEARS OF CHANGE AT WEST HEATH SPA, HAMPSTEAD, LONDON.
Author(s): J R A Greig
Organic samples from a spring on Hampstead Heath, north London provided the results for a pollen diagram covering the time from the early neolithic until the postmedieval period. As the site was small, it covers the vegetation of the dry land exceptionally well. There were also a few seeds that were studied. The results show that there was originally a lime forest. This was cleared in successive phases and replaced by open vegetation with heathland and holly woods. Cereals were grown, and buckwheat. In the latest phase, sweet chestnut, walnut and horse chestnut were planted
