ASSESSMENT OF METALWORKING SLAG FROM BROMFIELD MARCHING CAMP, SHROPSHIRE

Author(s): D Starley

Slag found in the ditch fill of the first century Roman marching camp was examined visually and found to derive from iron smithing. However, given the very small quantity of slag present, the importance of iron smelting on the site should not be over-stated and the possibility of the slag being residual should be considered.
