Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Forbury Chapel, Church Street, Leominster, Herefordshire

Author(s): Alison Arnold, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Analysis was carried out on thirteen samples obtained from the roof timbers of this building, resulting in the construction of a single site sequence. Site sequence HFCASQ01, of 89 rings, contains nine samples and spans the period AD 1432-1520. Interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood boundary on the four samples that have this ring, indicates a felling for the timbers represented in c AD 1525. The last measured ring dates of the other five dated samples make it possible that they were also felled at this time. Attempts to date the remaining samples individually were unsuccessful. Tree-ring analysis of the roof timbers has shown at least four of them to have been felled in c AD 1525, with it likely that another five were also felled at this time.
